The Angamaly Village Union came into existence in 1950. Subsequently, a Panchayat committee was formed in May 1952. The Angamaly Municipality was constituted in April 1978, and an elected municipal council assumed office in 1980.

Geographically, Angamaly is a high-lying plain interspersed with small hills. The Angamaly Municipality comprises the eight *karas* (localities) of Vengoor, Karaparambu, Nayathode, Chembamboor, Peechanikad, Mangattukara, Kothakulangara, and Angamaly. Major places of worship here include Hindu temples such as Vengoor Bhagavathi Temple, Kidangoor Sreekrishnaswamy Temple, Kothamangalam Sree Krishna Temple, Vempiyam Shiva Temple, and the temples at Angadiparambu Padupuzha, as well as numerous Christian churches like St. George Forane Church and St. Mary's Jacobite Church. The Kodanad Elephant Shelter and the wide, shallow riverbank are the major tourist attractions in Angamaly. TELK (Transformers and Electricals Kerala Limited), a renowned company based in Angamaly, manufactures transformers and related equipment.

Boundaries

The boundaries of the municipality are: Karukutty and Mookkannoor panchayats to the north; Kalady and Thuravoor panchayats to the east; Nedumbassery, Sreemoolanagaram, and Kanjoor panchayats to the south; and Nedumbassery and Parakkadavu panchayats to the west.
